(WS=96) There is a latent power in this red, but also finesse and an underlying reserve. A deep well of black cherry, black currant, violet, graphite, and toasty oak flavors permeate its texture. The acidity and tannins are in sync, while the long aftertaste evokes black cherry, spice, and mineral elements. Best from 2024 through 2043.
(RP=94) The 2018 Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru has turned out beautifully, unwinding in the glass with a youthfully reserved nose of raspberries and plums, complemented by nuances of rose petals, spices, and orange rind. Full-bodied, layered, and concentrated, it's deep and multidimensional, with lively acids and beautifully refined tannins. This exhibits terrific potential for sustained bottle age.
(AM=90-92) This is aromatically similar to the Clos de Vougeot though, as would be expected, it's spicier. The sleek, intense, and muscular medium weight plus flavors manage to retain pretty good detail and while the finish is not super complex and is decidedly warm finish, it is admirably persistent.
